Forty-three eager riding beavers showed up at 8 a.m. across from town hall Saturday morning for the Mayor’s Third Annual ride to Presqu’ile Lighthouse and back. A distance of approximately 25 k.
A few serious riders set the pace. There were a few children who had to work harder than the adults to keep up. The majority took their time with riders spread out along the route. There were marshals to direct traffic and hand out water.
All who attended received a free t-shirt and a ticket for the pancake breakfast set up on Main Street.
According to Mayor Mark Walus commenting on the increased response to the ride this year, “I can only attribute to Tom Kirkwood … he has found sponsorship, he has improved the route, established different stop stations along the way to ensure the safety. “
“We are over 43 riders this year. It’s a great event. It’s a free event. All the good things of community.”
Organizer Tom Kirkwood said, “I thought two years ago I could crank it up a notch. So we tried to get some businesses to sponsor us. Were very successful and its getting bigger and bigger every year. Next year we are going to put posters in the school and we hope to get 75.”
